MA, MHC-LP, Psychotherapist

Supporting individuals, couples, and families as they navigate their paths towards healing, connection, and empowerment.

Rob Nelson, MA, MHC-LP, is a New York based psychotherapist trained in Clinical Mental Health Counseling at the University of the Cumberlands. He brings experience working in school, private practice, and non-profit settings with children, adolescents, adults, couples, and families, supporting clients in navigating a wide range of concerns including anxiety, depression, trauma, career transitions, grief, family conflict, relationship difficulties, recovery, and life changes. Rob has also worked extensively with clients on family dysfunction and spirituality.

Rob’s approach is integrative, caring, and grounded in evidence-based modalities, including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), person-centered, humanistic, existential, and psychodynamic frameworks, with additional influence from somatic and Internal Family Systems (IFS) approaches. His work emphasizes helping clients understand and explore patterns in thoughts, emotions, and behaviors while building practical tools for regulation, insight, and meaningful change. Rob also supports clients in addressing overthinking and emotional reactivity, fostering awareness, skill-building, and adaptive coping, with a focus on cultivating acceptance, self-love, and safe, healing growth.

Rob’s style is collaborative, down-to-earth, and goal-oriented, while making space for deeper reflection and insight. He works with clients seeking to feel more in control of their thoughts, improve communication, and engage more fully in relationships and daily life. Sessions are direct, supportive, and nonjudgmental. Rob is committed to culturally responsive, affirming care and welcomes individuals from diverse backgrounds and identities.

In addition to his clinical work, Rob has a background in film and the performing arts, which informs his appreciation for creativity, expression, and narrative in the therapeutic process. He brings a multicultural and trauma-informed lens to his work and finds joy in cross-cultural experiences, including extensive international travel, often carrying the essence and spirit of the places he visits with him.
