Raya Abat-Robinson, Founder
“At our practice, we create a safe and welcoming environment where children, adolescents, adults, couples and families can explore their unique experiences, challenges, identities and aspirations. By fostering acceptance and understanding, we aim to provide tailored support that respects and acknowledges the diverse perspectives, backgrounds, and intersecting identities of our clients.
We take pride in embracing diversity and fostering inclusivity. While we welcome clients from all walks of life, what truly distinguishes us is our steadfast dedication to serving AANHPI (Asian, Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander) communities, along with all BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) individuals. We are equally committed to those with immigrant backgrounds and first and second-generation Americans. Regardless of what brings you here, know that you are not alone and you can take steps forward to lead a more fulfilling life. We would be happy to accompany you in your journey.“

Frequently Asked Questions
Starting Therapy or Coaching
Beginning therapy or coaching at RAR Counseling is simple. Use our contact page to request an appointment or email us directly at info@rarcounselingnyc.com. A member of our team will respond to you within 24-48 hours. We can discuss your questions and select the best therapist or wellness coach for you. We offer both in-person and virtual therapy and coaching.
Frequency of Therapy or Coaching
The frequency of sessions will be determined based on need and interest. We will work together to create a plan that fits your needs and addresses your treatment or coaching goals.
The First Session
Before the first counseling or coaching session, you will fill out the new client intake packet, and during the first appointment, you will begin to share your story with us. We will discuss what you would like to address in the sessions, and we will get to know you. During the next few sessions, you will share more about your treatment or coaching goals, and we will work together to help you meet those goals.
Do you accept insurance or offer self-pay options?
Yes, we welcome both insurance and private pay clients. For therapy, we are in-network with the following Commercial Health Insurance Plans: Aetna and Cigna/Evernorth, and Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield (commercial plans) in New York and also accept out-of-network benefits. We can verify your insurance coverage for you. We understand that everyone’s financial situation is unique, so we offer sliding scale fees for clients who are paying out-of-pocket, based on their income. Insurance can’t be used for coaching services.
Are you in-network with any insurance providers?
Currently, we are in-network with the following Commercial Health Insurance Plans in New York: Aetna, Cigna/Evernorth and Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield (commercial plans).
What if I have out-of-network mental health coverage?
If you choose to use out-of-network mental health coverage for therapy, you will be responsible for paying the out-of-pocket cost upfront. After your payment, we can provide you with a superbill that you can submit to your insurance company for reimbursement, subject to their approval. We also work with Mentaya, a platform that helps clients get money back on out-of-network therapy sessions. If you have out-of-network benefits, Mentaya will file claims and handle the insurance paperwork to make sure you get reimbursed. They have helped people get thousands of dollars back per year. Mentaya’s goal is to save you time and money. It’s completely optional, and we do not benefit in any way from your participation.
Why Consider Paying Out-of-Pocket?
Insurance can be complex and limiting for mental health care. Here’s why paying out-of-pocket is a simpler and more flexible choice with several advantages:
-Personalized Care & Greater Freedom and Control: You choose your therapist and determine the length and focus of treatment.
-Enhanced Privacy: Your sessions remain confidential, with limited exceptions.
-No Diagnosis on Records: Your mental health history stays off your medical records.
-Holistic Support & Broader Range of Topics: Discuss non-psychiatric issues important to you, like coping with life changes, improving relationships, gaining insight, and developing new skills.
-Avoid the Hassles of Insurance: Many insurance plans offer limited mental health coverage and require preauthorization. This can restrict your choice of therapists, how many sessions you can have, and compromise your privacy. Insurance also mandates diagnoses.
Paying out-of-pocket simplifies your therapy experience, providing greater control, privacy, and flexibility.
Flexible Self-Payment Choices
If you choose to pay for your sessions out-of-pocket, we offer a sliding-scale fee structure tailored to your income and financial circumstances.
What is the "No Surprise Act" and "Good Faith Estimate"?
The “No Surprise Act” is a federal law that helps protect you from unexpected medical bills, including those from mental health services. In New York, this means you should receive a “Good Faith Estimate” before starting therapy, outlining the expected costs. This estimate helps you understand what you’ll need to pay, so you won’t be surprised by hidden fees. However, it’s important to note that the actual charges cannot exceed the estimate by more than $400 without your consent.
Should I try Wellness Coaching or Therapy?
Coaching is goal-driven and future-focused.
Therapy addresses emotional and mental health concerns.
Differences:
- Focus and Goals: Coaching for goals, therapy for mental health.
- Time: Coaching looks forward; therapy may delve into the past.
- Insurance: Therapy can be covered; coaching not.
Choosing:
- Goals: Coaching for achievement, therapy for healing.
- Mental Health: For emotional distress, consider therapy.
- Insurance Coverage: Therapy or mental health counseling services may be covered by health insurance plans when there is a diagnosed mental health condition. Coaching is not covered by insurance – it is considered a service for personal or professional development rather than treatment for a medical condition.
- Consult: Get personalized advice from a professional. Choose what suits your needs, goals, and preferences.
Both support personal growth and well-being.
“I have worked with Raya and having her as a therapist has been—without exaggeration—life-changing. She has been a stable source of support helping me navigate anxiety, trauma, ADHD, perfectionism, life transitions, and everything in between. She is an exceptional listener, asks questions that make me stop in my tracks and think, and helps me develop coping skills particularly for anxiety. She is also extremely perceptive, remembers details I’ve shared, and is able to call out patterns that I might have missed. I think what sets Raya apart is that at the end of each session, she actually takes the time to summarize what she hears is the “issue” I’m facing, and recommends a path forward for the week. This is such a valuable piece of therapy that I didn’t realize I was missing until I started working with Raya. Sessions with her feel comfortable yet invigorating—it often feels like we are a team working together. There’s nothing like walking away from a session feeling like we reached an epiphany or unlocked a new way of perceiving an issue. Raya is very flexible and will do everything she can to work with your schedule. I’m so thrilled to continue my therapy journey with her.”
“My mental health journey started in December 2020. I was feeling incredibly lost, as most were, due to the lost years caused by the pandemic and to a series of events in my then- relationship, leading me to realize I needed someone to talk to.
They say that finding a therapist is like dating– you have to go on several dates to find the right one. To add another layer of complexity, it was extremely important for me to find a therapist who was Asian-American. I needed someone who would be able to understand and directly empathize with my experiences growing up as a first-generation child in America. I was lucky enough to come across Raya as the first, and only, therapist during my research phase. We’ve been working together ever since our first discovery session.
What began as an attempt to understand my unhealthy romantic relationship habits evolved into a beautiful 3 year (and counting) journey that led to a deeper understanding of myself, and how to achieve the best version of her. Over the years Raya and I have worked through deeply understanding my immigrant family dynamic and upbringing in a small town, and how it has affected my relationship with romantic partners, self identity, self-worth, personal friendships and career. In addition to our core work, she’s been an important part of my support system when life has been thrown off its tracks along the way. I’m happy to say that we’ve tackled a lot of the questions I had about myself at the beginning of our journey, and then some 🙂
Looking back on the last 3 years, her methods have led to my self-actualization. I am eternally grateful that I get to work with her by sharing the most intimate parts of my life and I look forward to continuing the journey together!”
